HI! Have some music!
I did it for you! YOU DESERVE THIS a la Megan Rapinoe. We’re all doing the best we can with what we have.
Here’s July’s playlist. (Paying subscribers got this a couple weeks ago!) There are so many gay songs on here that the algorithm is exclusively suggesting songs for, by, and about lesbians now which is like oOOoOH NooOOoooO 😏
Some personal news
I managed to not buy anything from Amazon yesterday to support the warehouse workers who are striking!!! I will also not be buying anything today DESPITE many pressing (that’s sarcasm) consumer needs!
I was feeling wishy-washy about the effectiveness of such a boycott, UNTIL I read this “ah yes of course” point from Jes:
I mean theoretically I’d love to be a “I don’t even own a TV” type of person about Amazon* but I guess it wouldn’t mean much if I boycotted a store I never bought anything from SOOO IN SUMMARY, I did it and so can you. To quote Evie:
*and about only Amazon, never about TV, TV 4ever <3333
Dooon’t cryyy oooout looooud
Much like Jia Tolentino, I ALSO didn’t know (until I read her excellent piece on flawed masterpiece Drop Dead Gorgeous) that it was a huge flop and adults hated it!!! Ugh narcssss!
In the Times, Janet Maslin wrote that the movie contained “what may be a record number of miserably unfunny jokes.” In L.A. Weekly, Manohla Dargis declared that it had “no metaphoric resonance, no ostensible target, and finally, no purpose outside of its own existence.” In the San Francisco Examiner, Wesley Morris called it “relentlessly defective” and suggested that, given the dearth of mainstream movies about the poor white underclass, it “should be renamed ‘Drop Dead Ghetto’ and hauled off to the ‘Jerry Springer’ hall of shame.”
Speaking of polarizing content
Since I shared my beautiful to-read list with you, I’ve only managed to squeak through ONE (1) book*. But I loved that book (NORMAL PEOPLE BY SALLY ROONEY) with my life because Rooney is, IDK, young and Irish and great.
He does have immaculate taste. He's sensitive to the most minuscule of aesthetic failures, in painting, in cinema, even in novels or television shows. Sometimes when Marianne mentions a film she has recently watched, he waves his hand and says: It fails for me. This quality of discernment, she has realised, does not make Lukas a good person. He has managed to nurture a fine artistic sensitivity without ever developing any real sense of right and wrong.
It’s a DAMN TREAT, and I started Fleishman Is In Trouble yesterday and ;__; ILU Taffy Brodesser-Akner. It was just about a year ago that I sat on the deck on vacation with my parents reading aloud incredulously to my Mom from Taffy’s NYT profile on Gwyneth Paltrow, whiiiich I’m just realizing I’ve told you about already, WELCOME TO ME a la Kristin Wiig.
WHAT ARE WE REEEEADING?
*that said, season 2 of Instant Hotel is so so good!!!!
Only a few episodes in still, so no spoilies but
So far I’m really enjoying Stranger Things 3: The Kids Are Huge and They Swear Now and Also Everyone’s Horny!!!!
My new party trick is sexy dancing to the theme song! Try it!
Speaking of errr pop culture,
I just got deeply into Who? Weekly so I’m catching up with a lifetime of Bobby tweets, sorry
I truly love the podcast and feel IN MY BONES the way Lindsay and Bobby talk about celebrities/Hollywood/whatever. I love when people get passionate about silly things because it reminds me that EVERYTHING IS SILLY BECAUSE WE’RE ALL *AIRHORN* M-M-MOOOOOORTALLLLLL!
Remembering “Drive Around and Think About the Lie” at various times throughout the day makes me literally LOL, which reminds me my mother-in-law was reading a text to me the other day and she translated LOL into “Lots of Luck” and I didn’t have the heart to correct her, partially because it’s such an optimistic take!!
Speaking of optimistic,
I love you!,
Lindsey
